It’s That Time of Year: Summer Safety Tips for Kids

May 30, 2013
As summer approaches, it’s time to consider seasonal safety tips for kids. Summer is a wonderful time of year for children, but it’s also a time when risks abound and reduced parental supervision is likely.

Pedestrian Safety
If you have children that are reaching that age where they’re allowed away from the home without supervision, then an important aspect of summer safety is going over proper pedestrian behavior. Go over basic concepts, such as looking both ways and running not walking, and stress that when walking on or near a road, it’s the wrong time for horseplay.

Bicycle Safety
If your children ride bicycles, then stress bicycle safety tips for kids. Prior to summer, make sure that the child’s helmet is in good condition and still fits. If not, purchase a new helmet. It’s also important to stipulate that the child wear a helmet whenever on any wheels, including skateboards and scooters. Go over the rules of the road, and if you live in an urban environment, explain bike lanes and such.

Water Safety
For preteens, forbid swimming without adult supervision, such as you, a neighbor or a lifeguard. If the child is not a strong swimmer, go over the basics and, if possible, practice the skills together. If your child is a strong swimmer, don’t forget that no child is drown-proof. Be aware that without supervision, small children can drown in baby pools and even buckets.

Sun Protection
Sun exposure is a major summer safety issue, and overexposure is common. Have plenty of sunscreen available, and require the child to wear it. It should be reapplied every two hours. Avoid long-term exposure during the peak hours, and provide the child with a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses and proper clothing during them. Kids shouldn’t avoid being outdoors in the summer, but they should take advantage of shade and other relief.

Dehydration & Heat Illness
After sun exposure, the second most common issue is dehydration. Children and adults should have plenty of water, and consider buying a stainless steel canteen that the child can use to have water on them at all times. An important rule of summer safety is that dehydration and heat stroke often set in long before the person feels the effects.

Ticks & Poison Ivy
Use tick and insect repellant. In areas where ticks are prevalent, wear long sleeves and pants. Do the same in areas where poison ivy, oak and sumac are common. If you don’t know how to identify those three plants, learn, and then teach those skills to your children. During the summer, make it a habit to check for ticks at the end of each day.

Home Security
If your children will be home alone during the summer, then safety tips for kids should include basic home security. Teach them how to use the alarm system. Consider upgrading to a system like Total Connect by Honeywell, which allows you to unlock/locks and access security camera feeds from any Web-enabled device. If you’re interested in upgrading, contact Pacific Alarms, which is a Honeywell-authorized dealer and a leading security firm in Los Angeles since 1953.

Honeywell: The Leading Alarm System in California

May 19, 2013
When you’re at home, you should feel safe and secure, protected from the dangers of the world around you. The reality, however, is that dangers are present even in your home. But we have the solution.

We Install Honeywell Home Security Systems

Pacific Alarms can help ensure safety for you, your loved ones and your property. We confidently install the type of alarm system California residents demand – one that delivers maximum protection and immediate response from emergency personnel 24/7.

The brand of alarm systems we have trusted for many years is Honeywell, the top manufacturer of home security systems in the world. The company’s commitment to quality and dependability are what make Honeywell California residents’ preferred home security brand.

Our Alarm Systems Protect from All Common Dangers

National crime and home emergency statistics give homeowners many reasons to be concerned. Your concerns can be alleviated when you choose Pacific Alarms to protect your home with an alarm system in California counties including Los Angeles, Ventura and Orange Counties. Here are just some of the dangers we’ll help you avoid:

Burglary: The US Department of Justice recently reported more than 2,150,000 annual burglaries in the United States. Additional statistics demonstrate that a home protected by a home security system is three times less likely to be broken into. The presence of the system, indicated by signage around the home, is a proven deterrent. If the thief attempts to break into your home anyway, the sounding of the alarm will cause them to flee in the vast majority of cases, and police will be on the way within seconds.

Fire: A recent estimate by the National Fire Protection Association put the value of property loss from residential fires at $6,875,000 per year. The key to reducing property damage and saving lives is fast response from local firefighters. Our Honeywell California alarm systems guarantee immediate response from emergency personnel. They do this with the signal they send directly to the central monitoring station that fire or smoke has been detected.

Medical Emergency: Heart attacks, strokes and other medical emergencies often happen at home. Falls are a major problem too. According to the Centers for Disease Control, falls account for about one-half of all accidental deaths that occur at home. Getting to the victim promptly is essential. When medical emergencies arise, help can be summoned right away, the lives of many of those who suffer heart attacks, strokes or falls can be saved.

Peace Officers Memorial Day – May 15, 2013

May 15, 2013
Wednesday, May 15th, is Peace Officers Memorial Day.  All U.S. flags fly at HALF STAFF.

In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation which designated May 15th as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that date falls as Police Week.

We regularly take time to salute the troops that gave their lives in the line of duty; let’s take a moment and be grateful for all Law Enforcement Officers who have similarly fallen to protect us here at home.

Please join Pacific Alarms in thanking the men and women of law enforcement for everything they do.

NFPA Report Highlights Need for Better Los Angeles Fire Protection

May 7, 2013
Although Los Angeles has among the highest residential fire rates in the country and among the most stringent fire codes, many area homeowners are woefully unprepared to prevent and detect fires. In an ideal scenario, fire prevention and detection is integrated into the home security in the Los Angeles residence, and the system is monitored around the clock by a state-of-the-art response facility.

Home Fires Kill Seven Every Day
A recent report by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) demonstrates the importance of fire safety. According to U.S. statistics, one in 320 households suffers from a home fire each year, and the financial damages from those fires exceed one billion dollars. More importantly, seven people will die every day in house fires; the elderly are the most likely to die, followed closely by infants and toddlers.

Smoking is still the leading cause of fire-related deaths in the U.S. The NFPA advises that you require all smokers to do so outside. Provide them with an ashtray that is deep, sturdy and nonflammable. If smoking is a common occurrence, consider installing an additional smoke detector in the exterior area that you have assigned for the activity, such as a porch.

Cooking is the leading cause of house fires and fire-related injuries, which is why the kitchen is a focal point of most residential Los Angeles fire protection services. The most common mistake is leaving an oven or other cooking device unattended. It is better to turn the device off and risk food quality rather than risk a fire. Also, create a safe perimeter when using fryers and smokers outdoors.

Safeguard your environment inside and out. Each month, perform a routine check. Outside, ensure that the area around the house and other ignition zones are free of inflammable items. Indoors, inspect all electrical cords, outlets and fixtures. If you use space heaters, ensure that there is at least a three-foot perimeter around them where inflammable materials are not allowed.

Fire Prevention
Install a smoke detector at each level of the home, including attics and basements. Make sure that there is detector in the kitchen, garage and near all basements, so it may be necessary to have multiple devices per level. Test all smoke alarms once a month, and replace the backup batteries once a year regardless of battery levels. Create a fire escape plan, and practice it with the family.
